A solitary black bear sighting just after sunset, observed from the safety of a vehicle.
There is a particular stillness that comes with the woods at dusk, especially when you realize you aren't the only one moving through the shadows. On the evening of October 20th, just after the sun had dipped below the horizon, I was heading back to my truck when I spotted a black bear. It was a brief, memorable encounter, with the bear appearing on the road about 100 yards away from where I was parked. The remoteness of the location made the moment feel especially significant. For anyone venturing into similar territory, it is worth keeping a few essentials in your pack: sunscreen, bug spray, and a good pair of binoculars to help you observe wildlife from a safe distance.
