JY Reef: Father-Son Fishing Day Turns into a Sea Adventure

By Wander ’BoutApril 7, 2026

East of St. Catherine’s Island, a fishing day with my dad, Roger, and our friend David brought rolling seas, submerged relics, hard-earned lessons, and a story worth bringing home.

JY Reef: Father-Son Fishing Day Turns into a Sea Adventure

An Underwater Graveyard—with Benefits

JY Reef is not your run-of-the-mill reef. At 55–75 feet down, subway cars, M-60 battle tanks, and even a Liberty ship rest on sand and coral, creating structure for lionfish, snapper, and grouper. Casting over those submerged relics felt like dropping lines into history.

When the Ocean Puts You to the Test

No account of this trip is complete without the swells. They ran four to six feet, and I learned the hard way that seasickness can become part of an offshore fishing story. Ginger snaps, ginger ale, Dramamine, a steady view of the horizon, and extra bags all earned their place aboard.

Patience, Persistence, and Payoff

Once I rallied, Dad and David kept the lines in the water and guided the boat over the reef. Every tug against the current made the rough ride worthwhile. When the reel finally screamed, the best part was not the size of the fish. It was the high-fives, the shared adrenaline, and Dad’s laugh.

Lessons from the Deep

The day taught us more than how to handle big swells. Family bonds grow stronger when you make it through the absurd together—cheering a keeper grouper toward the rail while dodging rogue waves. The queasiness passed; the sunlit water, jokes, and story stayed.

Gear That Helped

  • A compact spinning combo that could handle reef fishing without taking over the boat.
  • A sensitive float for spotting bites while the boat moved beneath us.
  • A secure rod holder for the moments when both hands were needed elsewhere.
  • A backpack cooler stocked with cold drinks and easy snacks.

Planning a Reef-Fishing Day

Choose an experienced captain, review the forecast and sea conditions, and ask about the run offshore before booking. Pack sun protection, water, food, and motion-sickness supplies—even if you normally feel steady on a boat.

What We Brought Home

Whether you bring home dinner or only a story, a reef-fishing day can become a lasting family memory. Ours came with rough water, submerged history, a few hard-earned lessons, and plenty of laughter.
